Ahead of your assessment

A smiling doctor sits at his desk engaging in a consultation with a patient seated across from him in a medical office.

People have told us they want practical, straightforward help ahead of their assessment. This includes:

  • clear information about what to expect before, during and after the assessment
  • practical tips for looking after your wellbeing while you wait

Things you can do now

  • Read the information we. send you after your referral is accepted
  • Write down examples of how ADHD traits affect your daily life (you could ask someone who knows you well if they can help with background information)
  • Keep a note of any questions you want to ask at your assessment

Preparing for your assessment appointment

Taking a few small steps before your appointment can help you feel more prepared.

You will be sent some information after your referral is accepted, which explains how to prepare for the assessment and what happens before, during and after the appointment.

Your care coordinator is your main point of contact for questions and guidance. They will give you their contact details directly.

Looking after yourself while you wait

Waiting for an ADHD assessment can be hard. It can bring up a lot of feelings. That’s completely normal. There are things you can do to help yourself while you wait.

You do not need to do everything at once. Choose one small thing that feels manageable today:

  • If you feel restless: try moving your body in a way that feels manageable, such as walking, stretching, cycling, yoga or dancing.
  • If you feel overstimulated: try reducing noise, light or other sensory input. If you can, rest somewhere quieter.
  • If you forget to eat or drink: try setting reminders, keeping water nearby, or having easy snacks available.
  • If forms feel difficult: take your time. You can answer honestly and in your own words.

If you feel unable to keep yourself safe, or you need urgent mental health help, seek urgent support now through NHS 111, your local crisis line, or 999 in an emergency.
