The team at Wealden Ridge Medical Partnership recently took part in Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism, delivered on 9 July by Care Talent Collective in partnership with Sussex Primary Care Provider Collaborative (SPCPC).
The training was delivered at Newick Community Centre and brought the entire practice team together to learn more about the experiences of people with a learning disability and autistic people, helping staff develop the knowledge and understanding needed to provide more inclusive and accessible healthcare.
Dr Ragu Rajan, GP Partner at Wealden Ridge Medical Partnership, said:
“Doing this in Newick Community Centre, with our entire practice team in the room, felt right — this is about our community and the patients with a learning disability or autism we see every week. The health inequalities they face demand this kind of commitment. Thanks to PCPC and South Downs Health & Care for making it bespoke to us.”
The training received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, with many highlighting the impact of hearing directly from people with lived experience.
One participant said:
“You don’t really appreciate the impact until you’ve done the training. Hearing the stories and lived experiences shared by an autistic co-trainer and a co-trainer with a learning disability really sticks with you. It brings everything to life in a way that stays in your mind.”
Another attendee commented:
“A really interesting and thought-provoking training session that opened my eyes and made me much more aware.”
At SPCPC, we are passionate about supporting primary care teams to improve understanding, reduce health inequalities and deliver more inclusive care for people with a learning disability and autistic people. Training such as this plays an important role in helping healthcare professionals make services more accessible and responsive to the needs of their patients.
